Bloomington, Ind. – Jeffrey Craig Buchsbaum, M.D., Ph.D., A.M., has joined the radiation oncology team at the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute (MPRI). Buchsbaum is one of six radiation oncologists who will specialize in proton therapy treatment plans at MPRI. His position also includes an appointment to the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Radiation Oncology as an associate professor of clinical radiation oncology.
”The addition of Dr. Buchsbaum to our faculty enhances MPRI’s international reputation for caring for pediatric patients,” said Dr. Peter Johnstone, president, CEO, and interim medical director. “With his extensive experience, including working at St. Jude Children’s Cancer Center and with the Children’s Oncology Group, he is a significant addition to our staff.”
Dr. Buchsbaum, who specializes in treating complex tumors of the head, neck and brain, joins MPRI from Wellington, Fla., where he was a radiation oncologist and associate professor of radiation oncology at the University of Miami. He has also worked as an assistant professor of radiation oncology at St. Jude Children’s Cancer Center in Memphis, Tenn., and as an associate professor of radiation oncology and pediatrics at Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute in Hershey, Pa.
“From how hands-on the physicists and nurses are to the precision of the treatment plan to the focus on the patient, the quality of care delivered at MPRI is unbelievable,” said Dr. Buchsbaum. “Everyone at MPRI is dedicated to creating the best possible plan and doing what’s right for our patients without compromise.”
Dr. Buchsbaum earned both a medical degree and a doctorate in molecular biophysics and biophysical chemistry from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md. He also holds two degrees in physics from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. He completed his internship and residency at The Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
The author of four book chapters as well as peer-reviewed papers and scientific abstracts, Dr. Buchsbaum has been active in cancer research and international efforts to advance the treatment of cancer through the Children’s Oncology Group. He also founded a non-profit organization called Beaming Buddies, which is dedicated to improving the lives of cancer patients and their families.
Dr. Buchsbaum joins MPRI’s pediatric cancer specialists Dr. Andrew Chang (MPRI’s director of pediatric oncology) and Dr. Mark McDonald.
“I am delighted that we have such a talented team,” added Dr. Johnstone.
