A unique feature of the Indiana University Health Proton Therapy Center is the use of our Patient Resource Center and the services of a patient concierge. Our patients and their caregivers come to us facing some of the greatest crises of their lives; fear and anxiety that accompany a diagnosis of cancer, how to fight the disease, understanding new family roles, and even navigating a new town. The center will give patients and their families an opportunity to speak with and get involved in the lives of others who are navigating through the same trials. Most importantly, this is a house of hope. It is our goal to create an atmosphere that is conducive to giving our patients a renewal of hope and emotional health.
The patient concierge is available to assist you with understanding the housing options and a wide variety of non-medical information relating to your stay in Bloomington. This includes area resources, churches, shopping options, barbers, school tutoring, banking options, library access, entertainment ideas, access to recreational facilities and other useful information that will be helpful as you transition to the Bloomington community for treatment.
The patient concierge can also assist in locating some of the cumbersome “equipment” that may be needed for visitors such as a changing table, car seats, pack ‘n play cribs, or entertainment and household items. In addition, we have a library of VHS tapes, DVDs and books for both children and adults that are also available on loan to our guests.
The Patient Resource Center houses the office of the patient concierge and is used for a number of activities including play groups, support groups, and meetings with patients.
It is also a place for patients and their families find a common meeting place, read, work, or relax.
The Center has all the comforts of home with a complete kitchen, big screen TV, laundry facilities, a computer station with printer and wireless access for your laptops. It is well equipped with a great play area for children, including toys, books, DVDs, a train set, a Wii game system, air hockey and crafts. There are also a number of riding toys available for use on the patio with furniture that offers a nice, relaxing space to enjoy the great outdoors.
The Center is a great place to truly relax and enjoy the company of your family without the distractions of treatment. No appointments are needed – you are welcome to come by anytime.
The Indiana University Health Proton Therapy Center owes a great deal of thanks to many local families and grateful patients for contributing to the offerings at the Patient Resource Center. Nearly every convenience at the Center is a result of contributions.
