Welcome to the Indiana University Health Proton Therapy (formerly the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute). The IU Health Proton Therapy Center is a unique global asset in a unique Hoosier locale. There are fewer than two dozen proton facilities worldwide treating the full constellation of human tumors, and only eight others in the United States.
Co-located with the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility on the Indiana University Bloomington campus, the IU Health Proton Therapy Center has been treating patients since 2004. Our team has extensive experience treating numerous conditions including pediatric malignancies, prostate cancer, rare lesions of the central nervous system and spinal cord, in addition to complex cancer recurrences.
In mid-2008, the IU Health Proton Therapy Center (then MPRI) was integrated within the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center. This move cemented firm ties not only with the IU School of Medicine, but also with Clarian Health, one of our parent organizations. By allowing access to the significant personnel, technology, and contracting infrastructures of IU and Clarian, we became much better positioned within the competitive healthcare landscape.
In January 2011, we changed our name from MPRI to the IU Health Proton Therapy Center as part of a larger effort to establish a new identity that better aligns with Indiana University Health (formerly Clarian Health). We are proud of this affiliation. For our patients, the IU Health name will become synonymous with high quality, coordinated patient-centered care.
The IU Health Proton Therapy Center physicians and staff are among the finest in the nation. All of our board-certified physicians are on the faculty of the IU School of Medicine and provide not only clinical care but are also involved with research. Our medical and professional staff members live our mission “to leverage our unique technology to improve our patients’ health, and promote innovation in education and research.” We pride ourselves on delivering extraordinary care in a collaborative and compassionate environment.
If you are a patient considering proton therapy, I encourage you to contact us to discuss your case with our staff. Understanding cancer – in any of its forms – includes understanding what treatment options are available to you. If proton therapy is an option, then I invite you to explore this option with us. For patients visiting our facility for an extended stay, I am certain that you will find the Bloomington community to be a shining example of “Hoosier Hospitality.”
If you are a physician and are interested in learning more about proton therapy or referring a patient to us, please contact me or any of the physicians on staff. You can call our main number, 866.487.6774, or submit your inquiry online. If you happen to be in the area, I invite you to tour our facility and see the work that is being done at the IU Health Proton Therapy Center. You will leave impressed, energized and engaged in the wonders of proton therapy.
